Day 3, Venice to Gradisca D’Isonzo

First our final sumptios breakfast!

Breakfast buffet (eggs and cheeses are brought to the table)
The Hotel bar

The simple regional train journey to our connecting point at Trieste airport. Very helpful employee in ticket office to ensure we caught the correct bus and made the request for our request stop at Gradisca D’Isonzo. Equally helpful bus driver. Good ambassadors for the region:-) Thank you!

Walked the 200 metres to Hotel Franz, in Gradisca D’Isonzo, crowned one of Italy’s one hundred most beautiful towns.

Wandered the v short distance to the centre, where we snacked on pizza verde Al fresco.

After lunch we walked the 4 miles to the Monumeto ai caduti – words cannot express the images brought to mind of 100,000 Italian young men killed defending the 600km Isonzo border or worse the approximately half a million lives “flowers of Europe and the world” cut down in WW1.

View of the memorial from a typical trench chiselled from the rock (the rock being shattered by explosives caused further damage in the form of shrapnel)

It was a sombre walk back.
