Marsha Matruh to Siwa Oasis
In 324 BC Alexander the Great trekked west across the western Egyptian desert to consult the oracle in Siwa who confirmed he was divine.
Siwa is about 40 miles from the Egyptian-Libyan border and we needed permits to go there and were stopped at multiple army and separate police checkpoints. The road was currently under construction and we would at times cross what would become a central reservation but is a gravelly mound to travel facing oncoming traffic!
Siwa has a population of about 40,000. There are Berber-speaking inhabitants.
The oasis has four large lakes, and there are also hundreds of freshwater and saltwater pools.
